The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced its decision to “immediately” ground all the Boeing 737 Max aircrafts that are currently being used by the Indian airlines. There are a total of 8 of the aircrafts which are currently grounded. Following the order by the Indian Aviation Watchdog DGCA, Spice Jet has canceled a total of 14 flights on Wednesday and has promised to operate additional flights for Thursday for all its inconvenience faced by its passengers and that they deeply value for their precious customers. They said that “Of the 76 planes in our fleet, 64 aircraft are in operating condition and we are confident of minimizing the inconvenience to our passengers and to attain normalcy in our operations.” This was stated just after the notice issued by the DGCA for all the Boeing 737 Max users.
This decision was taken after the crash of the Boeing 737 Max by the Ethiopian Airlines near Addis Ababa killing a total of 157 people where 4 of them being Indians. It was a very tragic accident, hence almost all the airliners operating in the World has joined forces and choose to ground the Boeing 737 Max. This decision took quite a long time, but finally after the long wait, the aviation Watch dog issued a statement at 4 pm saying no Boeing 737 Max aircraft will be granted for use in the Indian airspace. A DGCA official added this statement on Wednesday to the PTI.
A senior Govt official said that a meeting will be hold by the Civil Aviation Ministry with all the Indian airlines at 4 pm Wednesday to prepare a contingency or backup plan for all the canceled Boeing 737 Max aircrafts which were operating by all the Indian Airliners. As these airlines are very popular and value the importance and of their passengers, Spice jet added that ” While a majority of passengers affected as a result of these cancellations have been accommodated by Spice Jet on alternate flights, rest have been offered a full-refund.” The Spice Jet officials also stated that for the “Safety and security of our passengers, crew and operations are of utmost importance to us and we are closely working with the regulator and manufacturer to resolve the matter,”
This was the second such crash involving the Boeing 737 Max aircraft in less than 5 months which is a thing to consider as they maybe having some technical or other issues. In 2018 October, a Boeing 737 Max aircraft operated by the Lion Air crashed and killed over 180 people in Indonesia. This is hence why the Boeing 737 Max is grounded by the maximum majority of the airliners.
